Welcome to the Sunset Music and Education Foundation
OUR MISSION
Sunset Music & Education Foundation transforms lives through music and education.
We produce world-class performances that amplify underrepresented voices—including women, LGBTQ+ artists and artists of color—foster intergenerational learning, and create pathways to a brighter future for emerging artists and leaders.
OUR VISION
A community where people of all ages, backgrounds and identities have access to the connection, opportunity and possibility music can create—regardless of age, income or circumstance.
WHAT WE DO
Music is what we do. People are why.
We produce world-class concerts that bring generations together and use those stages to create something that lasts long after the final note.
Through our SMARTS Initiative—Sharing Music. Accessing Resources. Transforming Students.—we put instruments directly into students’ hands, provide scholarships, mentorship and master classes, and give young people opportunities to learn and perform alongside professional artists.
Our work is intergenerational by design. Young people gain mentors, confidence and opportunity. Older adults come together through live music and community. Music becomes the bridge between generations.
WHY WE DO IT
Because sometimes an instrument is more than an instrument.
When Eli was living in a group home, we placed his first instrument in his hands. He looked at it and asked:
“Is this really mine?”
That’s when I realized we weren’t just giving a child an instrument.
We were giving him something of his own. A sense of ownership. A place to belong. The possibility to discover something inside himself—and the message that he was worth investing in.
Later, he told us:
“I feel peaceful when I play. It’s the only time my mind stops racing.”
That’s what music can do. It can give a young person belonging, confidence, hope and possibility.
And at the other end of the generations we serve, our concerts give older adults a reason to get dressed, get out of the house and step out of isolation and into community—to hear great music, see familiar faces, meet new ones and feel connected.
That’s why we do this.
We’re not simply producing concerts.
We’re not simply giving away instruments.
We’re creating connection. Opening doors. Building community. And helping people see what’s possible for their lives.
The instrument is only the beginning.
