Friday night’s From Roots to Broadway opened with a powerful blend of artistry and pride. Kiah set the tone first, reclaiming the banjo and bluegrass for their African origins with raw, soulful fire. Sharing the bill with Ann Hampton Callaway — jazz royalty who is the best at what she does—created what I think was a brilliant conversation across genres. And with Jason Stuart’s sharp, heartfelt comedy threading it all together, the night moved effortlessly from ancestral roots to Broadway brilliance with humor, soul, and unmistakable pride.
